Barriers Adult Learners Face

Each learner in our program possesses a set of inherent strengths, unique abilities and a wealth of experience. However, each learner is also striving to overcome obstacles. Consider the following types of barriers adult learners face:

Situational

• lack of time, lack of transportation, cost of education, problems finidng childcare, other responsibilities

Dispositional

• low motivation, low self-esteem, fear of failure, embarrassment

Institutional

• scheduling, admissions criteria and process

Educational

• not a native English speaker, negative experience with education in the past, learning disabilities

What barriers do you anticipate Hopelink Adult Education students might have? What could you do to help them reduce or eliminate those barriers? How will you know when it's appropriate to assist the student or refer the student to a staff member?
