Featured Volunteer
Heartfelt thanks for all your dedicated work goes out to Jennifer, our featured volunteer.
What do you do at Hopelink Adult Education?
- I catalog books for the Eastside Literacy library. These are used primarily by the ESL, adult literacy, and GED tutors
and their students. Although there are some general interest books, most of the materials are tailored to support these efforts.
Tutors can learn new teaching theories and techniques, while students can find books written at a variety of reading levels yet
still of adult interest.
- I also volunteer at the Hopelink bookroom located off the lobby of the DSHS office in Bellevue. We give away children's
and adult books to clients coming into the office for other services, such as food stamps and housing assistance.
Why do you volunteer at Hopelink Adult Education?
- I have always volunteered and find it very rewarding. For years my efforts were focused on my daughters'
activities - sports, music, and PTA - but once they were grown I looked for some way to volunteer in the greater community.
My degrees are in English literature and library science, and I had enjoyed tutoring for Eastside Literacy many years ago,
so Hopelink's Adult Education Department is a natural fit for me. While cataloging in the library office I love hearing
the interaction between tutors and students, especially when a milestone or breakthrough is reached, so it is gratifying to
be a source of support in that process. And it is equally satisfying to contribute to the literacy effort by giving
away books to people who are dealing with major stresses in their lives and who appreciate this small gesture.
It's particularly fun to see the kids, some lively, some very shy, who come in and pick out books that they get to keep!
Thank you Jennifer!
